Belbin team roles 

One of the most established models of team behaviour was developed by Meredith Belbin. In the 1970's, through research and observations of managers in business simulation games, he identified and labelled the different roles that team members play. He also proposed that for a team to function well it needs a range and balance of the different team roles. Although there are some criticisms of the methodology, the model has stood the test of time. As Belbin says, 'nobody's perfect but a team can be!' 

Here are the roles and a brief description of each 

Coordinator

Calm leaders, able to delegate and see the big picture, good at coordinating complex projects involving many people 

Shaper

Strong personality, lead from the front, highly competitive, sometimes dominant and aggressive 

Plant

Imaginative and creative, original thinkers, may be eccentric and unorthodox 

Resource investigator

Well connected inside and outside the company, always able to access the necessary contacts and resources 

Monitor evaluator

Logical problem solvers, analytical, critical, sometimes negative 

Implementer

Good at putting plans into action and following instructions, prefer routine and predictability rather than using own initiative 

Team worker

Good listeners and diplomatic, concerned with maintaining group harmony 

Completer finisher

Perfectionist and anxious, concerned with meeting deadlines and completing jobs 

Specialist

Provide specialist knowledge, experts within own field but less concerned with things outside it 

 

 

Below are examples of the sorts of phrases that each team role member might use. Using the information above, label each box below with the appropriate team role.
